Winfield boys soccer player awarded Gamer of the Week

Oct. 05, 2012 @ 12:00 AM

Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. & the Putnam Herald are pleased to present this week's Gamer of the Week Award to Preston Sheldon of Winfield High School.

Head Coach Mike Foster couldn't be more proud of his Winfield High boys soccer team this year.

"This is an excellent group of young men and I can't say enough about them. Their work effort is very good and they've bought into our conditioning and substitutions," said Foster.

Senior leader and captain Preston Sheldon is a huge contributor on the team and is a big reason they are sitting pretty with a 12-1-2 record on the season.

"He has energy beyond belief and he can just run forever. Preston has been a really good team player this year with a ton of assists to teammate Steven Taylor," Foster said. "Preston has had to adjust his play this year now that teams are starting to key in on the forward's scoring prowess. He has to pass the ball a whole lot more. Even with that being said he has 12 goals in almost as many games and is having the senior season he deserves, given all the work he put into the off-season. Preston is a great leader. He leads by example on and off the field and never quits whether we are ahead or behind," said Coach Foster.

When asked why they have been so successful this year Preston answered, "Our coaches really got us into shape at the beginning of the season and it has paid off in a big way. It caused us to come together as a team and work together in everything we do."

Preston truly is a leader both on and off the field. He has a 3.8 GPA and a laundry list of extracurricular activities including: cross country, track, FBLA, NHS, Young Life, Link Crew, and is a student leader in his youth group at River Ridge Church.

When asked about his motivation and inspirations in life, Preston answered, "I give all the glory to God. With Him I can do all things. My parents have also really helped and encouraged me. Whether I have been injured or down on myself, they are always there to pick me up. I also just want to add that this is a great team; we are truly brothers. This has been an awesome season and I just want to thank all my teammates and my coaches for everything they have done."

Please look for other local area high school athletes to be named next weeks Gamer of the Week sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. and the Putnam Herald.
