Knights shine against Winfield

ONA — There was undoubtedly a bit of motivation for Cabell Midland's David Gaydosz heading into Friday night's matchup.

The former Winfield General ripped off six touchdowns against his old team and backfield mate Lowell Farley broke the 1,000-yard plateau on a 70-yard touchdown run in the second quarter as the Knights cruised past Winfield, 63-0.

"Being my former team, I just wanted to come out here and show out," Gaydosz said. "My line -- just like last week -- pushed hard and opened holes. Sometimes, I didn't know what to do because they were so big."

One week after tying the school record with six touchdowns against Woodrow Wilson, Gaydosz duplicated the feat against Winfield with the help of several General miscues.

It was all part of a huge night for the Knights.

While Gaydosz was busy jaunting in the end zone against his former team, it was the defense that stole the show.

Led by Gage Gould and Tyler Hayes, the Knights' defense sacked Winfield quarterback Toby Show nine times en route to allowing just 24 yards of offense to the Generals. Out of 56 plays, Winfield was tackled for negative yardage on 21 of them.

"They were lights out, and they've been like that all year," Cabell Midland coach Luke Salmons said. "it was awesome. They played really well -- got to the ball, turnovers -- and that's all effort."

The game was nearly over as soon as it began as miscues piled on the Generals quickly.

Winfield failed on an onside kick attempt to start the game, but rebounded to force a three-and-out. However, punt returner Tyler Hill fumbled, giving the Knights possession at the Winfield 9-yard line.

It started a strong of five consecutive possessions in which Class AAA No. 1 Cabell Midland (7-0) started in Winfield territory.

Gaydosz capped four of the five drives with touchdowns coming from 3, 10, 14 and 18 yards.

Teammate Kasey Thomas added a 35-yard touchdown run before Farley rumbled 70 yards to eclipse the 1,000-yard plateau and push the lead to 42-0 at the break.

In all, the Knights rushed for 371 yards as a team on 38 rushes while the defense forced six fumbles and recovered three, including one by Aaron Elkins, who returned it for an 18-yard touchdown to cap the scoring in the game's final minute.

For Cabell Midland, it was a continuation of the strong play from the second half of last week's 70-33 win over Woodrow Wilson.

At halftime, the Knights led that contest 28-26 in an offensive scorefest.

However, in the last six quarters, Cabell Midland has outscored its opponents 105-8 with the defense playing strong.

"They're a freaking brick wall," Gaydosz said. "I go against those guys in practice and it's painful. It's good for me to go against that defense every day....A shutout is what we were going for tonight and we got it."

Seth Lewis finished with 76 yards on 22 carries for Winfield (2-5), but he was the only rusher in positive yardage figures for the Generals (2-5).

Show finished the contest 6-of-17 for 36 yards amidst heavy pressure all night.
