Wayne goes on road and routs No. 1 Scott

Oct. 06, 2012 @ 12:33 AM

WEST MADISON, W.Va. — While the SSAC ratings are all that matter at the end of the season, Wayne proved Friday night they can be quite a bit off at this point in the season.

The Class AA No. 3-rated Pioneers racked up 499 yards of total offense while holding No. 1 Scott to just two first-half first downs en route to a 47-6 victory over the Skyhawks on their Homecoming.

"A lot of guys are playing off blocks and flying to the ball," Wayne coach Tom Harmon said. "This is key to any playoff run."

The Pioneers (6-0) survived seven fumbles, four of which were lost. The turnovers barely slowed the offense.

Mason Hodge took the second play from scrimmage 80 yards for a score, while Brandon Spurlock added a 54-yard scoring run in the first half. James Egnor added an interception return for a touchdown and a 17-yard score in the win.

"James is a heady player. He's the kind of guy who is in the middle of chaos and remembers something briefly told to him earlier in the week," Harmon said. "It's priceless stuff."

Egnor later recovered a blocked punt at the 2-yard line which set up another score.

Meanwhile Grant Ferguson threw for 120 yards and two scores. The Pioneers won handily despite four turnovers and seven total fumbles.

Wayne, whose current 15-game winning streak began with a 50-20 win over Scott last year, never trailed. In fact, the Pioneers have not trailed at any point in any game since taking the lead over the Skyhawks in the first minute of the fourth quarter a season ago.

That streak is now at 683 minutes.

The Skyhawks were limited to 184 yards of total offense, much of which came after half. Wayne held Scott to just 45 yards in the opening two quarters.

"Our coaches do a nice job of making teams play a different way," Harmon said. "It's the good part of playing in a program that has won in the playoffs."

Wayne will travel to Tolsia for an intra-county showdown with the Rebels next week.
