Thundering Herd soccer shuts out Evansville, 2-0

EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- Marshall goalkeeper Daniel Withrow recorded his eighth shutout of the season Saturday night as the Thundering Herd defeated Evansville, 2-0, at Arad McCutchan Stadium.

Withrow made six saves in the shutout that established a Thundering Herd season record.

Marshall (9-1-1) scored in the first half when Andrew Ferguson collected a loose ball and lobbed a shot from the top of the 18-yard box over the arms of Aces keeper Eric Teppen at 34:18 of the first half.

Tom Jackson's goal in the second half after an Evansville (6-4-0) turnover iced the win.

SOFTBALL

HUNTINGTON -- Marshall puts the wraps on its softball fall exhibition schedule with a Sunday doubleheader against Ohio at Dot Hicks Field beginning at 1 p.m. A Marshall Alumni Game is at 11 a.m. Admission is free.

TENNIS

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Kai Broomfield and Ellie Ball from Marshall placed third Saturday in their doubles flight at the Tribe Invitational women's tennis tournament at William and Mary.

Dana Oppinger and Karlyn Timko from Marshall placed seventh in their doubles flight.

In other flights, Carmen Sanders from Penn State defeated Oppinger in the consolation semifinals; Paulina Los from Kansas beat Ball in the consolation semifinals; Crystal Yen from Harvard downed Broomfield in the semifinals; and Nika Khmolovska from Old Dominion beat Timko in the semifinals.
