Kalb starts from fifth spot to win scratch title

HUNTINGTON -- Tommy Kalb of Portsmouth, Ohio got the No. 5 seed in qualifying and then won four matches to take home the title Sunday in the Scratch Sport Lane Pattern Singles Tournament at Colonial Lanes.

Bowlers competed on the WTBA London lane pattern and scores were good. Kalb made a run at a perfect game in the semifinal match, starting with 10 strikes before leaving a 10-pin on the 11th shot for a 289. Eliminator-style format was used in the matches. Low score went out.

Steven Zimmer led qualifying with 972. Brian Fite shot 960, Ben Davis 937, J.R. Phillips 909 and Kalb 895. Zimmer had a bye in the first match. Match results are:

Match 1: Fite , 237; Phillips, 245; Kalb, 228. Davis, 227, out.

Match 2: Fite, 236; Phillips, 248; Kalb, 226. Zimmer, 160, out.

Match 3: Kalb, 289; Phillips, 193.

In the finals, Kalb beat Phillips 236-205.

299 helps Wolowinski to his first 800 series

HUNTINGTON -- Jesse Wolowinski got the first 800 series of his bowling career Monday night.

Wolowinski reeled off games of 299, 279 and 228 for an 806. The 299 and 800s are USBC honor scores.

Wolowinski left the 10-pin on his final shot in the opening game. The 299 is the fourth of his career.
