Freshman lineman Carter is leaving

July 03, 2008 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Marshall football player Micah Carter has transferred to NCAA Division II Concord of the West Virginia Conference.

Carter's high school coach, Woodrow Wilson's John Lilly, confirmed the move in a report by The Associated Press.

Lilly said he was surprised because he'd heard Marshall coaches were excited about Carter.

The true freshman lineman arrived at Marshall in January as a grayshirt recruit. Marshall head coach Mark Snyder moved him from center on offense to nose guard on defense during spring practice. The move was made primarily because of limited numbers along the defensive line, and Carter was expected to return to offense.

The 6-foot-4, 312-pound lineman also received interest from BCS programs before signing with the Thundering Herd.

According to NCAA rules, Carter will be eligible to play for the Mountain Lions this season because he transferred from Division I into a lower division.

Carter is the third Marshall player to leave this summer. Sophomore defensive tackle Shane Moore went to Norfolk State and redshirt freshman offensive guard Sergio Glenn transferred to North Carolina A&T.
