Lawrence County tops HHS
HUNTINGTON -- Lawrence County, Ky., struck for three runs on three hits in the third inning, and that was good enough for a 3-1 win over Huntington High at Cook-Holbrook Field Thursday night.
It looked early on as if the Bulldogs would open up big against the Highlanders, after starting pitcher Hunter Smith hit two batters and walked another to load the bases with no one out in the top of the first inning.
But Smith settled in to manage a fly-out and fan two batters to get out of the inning unscathed.
Smith hit a third batter in the top of the second, and again it looked like Lawrence County was in business, but a 6-4-3 double play ended the threat.
Huntington High went up 1-0 in the bottom of the second, with senior Matt Miller driving in Andrew Zban on a single.
In the top of the third, Lawrence County's Brock Turner doubled to bring in Noah Lambert and Joe Wallen. Brandon Stephens singled in the next at bat to bring Turner in.
Smith wouldn't allow a run for the rest of the game, pitching all seven inning for the Highlanders, but Huntington couldn't find the offense to get back into the game.
"Our hitters struggled and they will go through these phases where they struggle sometimes," said Huntington High coach Danny Harbert.
The Highlanders best chance to even things up came in the bottom of the seventh, when Miller hit a double to put himself on second and catcher Mark Shaver on third.
What looked like a sure single from Ronnie Musick was snagged by a lunging Turner at second base, who was able to get the ball to first and end the inning.
"Hunter Smith pitched a great game, he's a senior leader and he's mentally tough," Harbert said. "If you only give up three runs, you should be able to be in the ball game. Unfortunately, give Lawrence credit, they made some big defensive stops when they needed to."
Huntington High (5-2) hosts rival Cabell Midland Friday night at 7 p.m.
"They're going to put this game behind them and get ready for Midland -- they're fired up," Harbert said. "I expect to see a different level of enthusiasm for (Friday) night's game."
