VCU pulls out 4-1 win over MU tennis
BARBOURSVILLE -- VCU won two of three matches in doubles for the first point and took three in singles to post a 4-1 victory over Marshall in women's tennis Sunday at the Huntington Tennis Club.
The Thundering Herd (9-10) got its lone point from Ellie Ball at No. 5 singles. She lost the first set 6-1 to Olga Terteac, but won the next two 6-0, 6-3. It's her first three-set win this season.
"It came down to a couple of points here and there," Marshall coach John Mercer said. "We feel like we're that close, and this will better prepare us for the conference tournament when we play a lot more teams at that level. We're in the mix; it's just trying to get over that hurdle."
In singles, Cindy Chala won at No. 1, Yukako Noi at No. 2 and Salome Kvitashvili at No. 4 to secure the seventh straight win for the Rams (16-4). The other two singles matches were left unfinished.
Marshall will return to action Saturday against Liberty in Lynchburg, Va. Start time is 11 a.m. The Herd's final home match is April 10 against Louisville. Start time at the Brian David Fox Tennis Center is 1 p.m.
