Marshall's Woods wins C-USA Service Award

Apr. 07, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Erica Woods from the Marshall University women's basketball team was the Thundering Herd recipient of a Conference USA Winter Spirit of Service Award.

C-USA recognizes community service efforts of student-athletes three times during the school year. Winter awards are for men's and women's basketball, women's swimming and diving and men's and women's indoor track and field.

Woods is a redshirt junior guard from St. George, Bermuda, who averaged 7.1 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.4 assists in the 2012-13 season.

"It's an honor not only to represent my family, but also Marshall as an institution," Woods said. "I always try to do for others before I do for myself and I am humbled and thankful for the award."

Her community service work included leading basketball clinics for Huntington St. Joe PreSchool students and for Girl Scouts. She has visited hospital patients, volunteered at Marshall Sweetheart Clinics for young girls and participated in a Breast Cancer Awareness Walk.

She is a Sports Management major with a 2-year-old son.

"The thing you have to understand about Erica is given her background and not being from this country, it would be easy for her to be reserved and she's not," Marshall head coach Matt Daniel said.

"I think it's a true testament to the type of person that she is and a testament to the things her parents have instilled in her. I can't think of a better person to represent Marshall. I'm happy to have the opportunity to coach her and be around her every day.

"Hopefully she will continue to grow on and off the court."
