Herd hoping to turn it around

Jan. 04, 2013 @ 07:58 PM

ATHENS, Ohio — Nigel Spikes considers Marshall’s Thundering Herd to be at a critical point of the men’s basketball season.

Marshall (7-7) plays the Ohio Bobcats (8-5) at 2 p.m., Saturday, in the 13,080-seat Convocation Center with one final opportunity to get its game in shape before the Conference USA schedule begins.

The Herd opens the conference season Wednesday against Tulsa in Cam Henderson Center.

“Nothing else matters,” Spikes said Friday before the team bused to Athens. “It’s now or never.”

It’s the 100th meeting between schools roughly 80 miles apart that have been playing basketball games since 1921. The Bobcats lead the all-time series 53-46 and won the last two meetings that were both played in Huntington — 2011 CollegeInsider.com Tournament (65-64) and 70-68 last season. Marshall came out ahead the last time they played in Athens, 65-57 on Dec. 4, 2010.

Spikes is hoping Marshall goes into The Convo with a good attitude coming off a disappointing Wednesday performance at home in a 53-51 loss to Delaware State.

“We had a bounce-back practice (Thursday),” he said. “We had a little sense of desperation.”
