LAVALETTE -- Doug Covington and Jessi Dancy led the way Sunday in the inaugural duathlon event of the St. Mary's Medical Center Tri-State Triathlon at Beech Fork Lake.

Covington, 39, was the male duathlon winner with a time of 1 hour, 42 minutes, 23 seconds. The competition consisted of a 2.9-mile run, a 24.5-mile bicycle ride and another 2.9-mile run.

Dancy, 29, won the women's race with a time of 1:55.37.

Jeff Gibson and Frances Hughes placed first in the triathlon event. The triathlon had a one-half mile swim, 24.5-mile cycling leg and a 2.9-mile run.

Gibson, 35, won with a time of 1:37.08. Hughes, 43, posted a time of 2:01.58.

About 200 athletes signed up for either the duathlon, triathlon or triathlon relays.

HealthyHuntington.org promotes the event along with the Marshall University Marathon coming up Nov. 2.
