Herd falls to Rice in volleyball
HUNTINGTON -- Rice defeated Marshall, 3-0, in a Friday night Conference USA volleyball match in Cam Henderson Center.
Rice won, 25-15, 25-21, 25-18.
Karyn Morgan and Ashleigh McCord both had nine kills for the Owls, who have an 11-4 season record and are 3-2 in the conference. Natalie Bogan had seven kills and Tracey Lam had 12 digs.
Marshall (8-8, 1-5) was led by Jalicia Ross and Emily Sullivan with seven kills each. Elizabeth Fleming recorded 27 assists.
"It wasn't pretty," Marshall coach Mitch Jacobs said. "Hopefully a performance like this will get our pride up and we'll be prepared to play Houston on Sunday."
The Thundering Herd plays at home again at noon Sunday against Houston.
Women's soccer
HUNTINGTON -- SMU took a three-goal lead Friday and held on against Marshall for a 3-0 women's soccer win at Sam Hood Field.
SMU (5-7-1, 3-2-0 Conference USA) built its lead on goals by Sarah Benchaita, Kim Peabody and Dylan Jordan.
Marshall got on the scoreboard late with goals by Molly Snead and Erika Duncan. Snead and Duncan also assisted on each other's goals.
The Thundering Herd has an 11 a.m. Sunday match against Tulsa.
Swimming
HUNTINGTON -- The Thundering Herd women's team opens its swimming and diving season at noon today with a quad meet at Frederick A. Fitch Natatorium in Cam Henderson Center.
East Carolina, Xavier and West Virginia are in the meet. The visiting schools also have men's teams competing.
Admission is free.
Tennis
PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Kellie Schmitt and Karolina Soor from Marshall played doubles in the Dick's Sporting Goods challenger tournament on the USTA women's pro circuit.
Neuza Silva from Portugal and Nicole Thyssen of The Netherlands defeated the Thundering Herd pair, 7-5, 6-2, on Thursday.
Thyssen has a No. 158 WTA ranking in doubles while Silva ranks No. 222.
Schmitt and Soor won a Wednesday match against American players Madison Brengle and Kimberley Couts, 6-4, 3-6, 11-9.
Couts and Brengle are Nos. 192 and 221 respectively in the WTA doubles rankings.
Men's soccer
TULSA, Okla. -- No. 20 Tulsa plays host to Marshall at 8 p.m. today in a Conference USA men's soccer match.
The Golden Hurricane (7-3-1, 3-0-0) is coming of a 2-1 defeat of Kentucky. Marshall is 0-9-1 for the season and 0-2-0 in the conference.
