Marshall Marathon set to run Sunday
HUNTINGTON -- Runners will be on the streets early Sunday for the Marshall University Marathon.
Starting time is 7:30 a.m., with more than 800 athletes pre-registered. Late registration is from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday during the health expo and race packet pick-up at Huntington Physical Therapy, 2240 5th Ave. A Dean Ornish spaghetti dinner is being served from 4 to 7 p.m. Dinner is free for registered runners. Guests are $8.
Sunday's events include the 26.2-mile Marathon, Half-Marathon, Half-Marathon Relay and 5-Mile Walk.
"We're still hoping for 1,000 at race time," race director Tom Dannals said in a release.
A flat, USATF-certified course begins on Third Avenue at Cam Henderson Center and ends with a goal-line finish in Joan C. Edwards Stadium.
Mike Bartrum, a retired Thundering Herd and NFL player and Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame member, will toss footballs to runners as they approach the finish line.
"Having Mike Bartrum on the field for the finish is sure to be a big hit since competitors have always loved the final 100 yards carrying a football to the Marshall goal line," Dannals said.
The course goes into downtown past Pullman Square next to the Ohio River, into the West End and through Ritter Park.
Half-Marathon relay teams have two or three members running legs of 3.3, 5.7 and 4.1 miles.
HealthyHuntington.org conducts the marathon and an annual triathlon as part of the HealthierUS Initiative.
