Buffalo's Parkins selected as Cager of the Week

January 27, 2012 @ 12:00 AM

Teays Physical Therapy Center Inc. and the Putnam Herald are pleased to present this week's Cager of the Week award to Chelsey Parkins of Buffalo High School.

The 9-7 Buffalo Lady Bisons have had an up and down season. Preseason hopes were that the Bisons were going to be an experienced senior-led team, but they now only have one senior on the team -- leaving many underclassman to step up into leadership roles.

Sophomore Chelsey Parkins has been one of those underclassman. Last week Chelsey averaged a double double in the past four games with point and rebounds and has also collected over 20 blocks in those games as well. Her highest scoring game came against Sherman on Monday night where she scored 18 points, gathered 18 rebounds and had 8 blocks and 4 steals.

"Last week we moved the ball very well which led to many people scoring. We have been focused on playing as a team and not on individual stats. We want the win," said Chelsey about her team's success this past week. One of their big wins last week came against rival school Wahama with a final score of 74-59.

Coach Jamie Ball commented on Chelsey's play this season saying "She always works hard and gives 100 percent. She never has an off day and performs very consistently in games. She might not be the most outspoken leader on the court but is a motivating leader by example."

Both Chelsey and Coach Ball credited the team's defense and hard work to their victories. They also both agree that if the defense continues to improve the way it is that this Lady Bison's team should be very prepared going into the Sections.

Her inspiration and drive comes from her parents who were both athletes. "Mom and dad played sports so they really hard on me but it helps to push me to become better. They are at every game and cheering me on and even helps me in the off season to train for my upcoming sport."

Chelsey has a 3.8 GPA and is an active member in 4-H and is a part of the A State Champion softball team from 2011.

Look for Chelsey and other local area high school athletes to be named next week's Cager of the week sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center Inc. and The Putnam Herald.
