Redskins' Thompson captains 1st team

HUNTINGTON -- Felipe Thompson, who led Hurricane High School to a state championship, was named as captain of the Class AAA boys soccer all-state team by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association.

Thompson, a senior foreign exchange student from Santiago, Chile, had 47 goals and 11 assists for the Redskins.

Hurricane also had Alex White (13 goals, 22 assists) and defender Evan Miles on the all-state first team.

Spring Valley senior Jared Messer, who had nine shutouts and 118 saves, was a first team goalkeeper.

Huntington High seniors Matt Miller and Nathan DeMoss were also all-state first team selections with Winfield junior Hunter Sheldon.

Players on the all-state second team included Huntington High senior Jameson McCarthy and Spring Valley senior Christopher Holland.

All-state honorable mention players included Evan Vega from Huntington High; Jacob Maddox from Spring Valley; Rodrigo Bevaqua and Tim Hayslett from Hurricane; Brady Raymond of Point Pleasant; and Bryce Boggs, Preston Sheldon and Steve Taylor from Winfield.
