Williams named Freshman All-American

Dec. 11, 2012 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON - Freshman All-American honors continue piling up for Marshall University's football team.

On Monday, it was announced that CollegeFootballNews.com named Marshall punter Tyler Williams a Freshman All-American first team selection.

Marshall freshman linebacker D.J. Hunter and Thundering Herd freshman running back Kevin Grooms were named as Freshman All-American honorable mention selections by the web site.

The news comes just one day after Hunter was named as a Freshman All-American by The Sporting News.

Williams ended a stellar 2012 season by averaging 45.19 yards per punt, good for ninth nationally. He was a Ray Guy Award semifinalist, and was Conference USA's only representative in that group.

Williams had 13 punts of more than 50 yards while placing 16 punts inside the 20-yard line.

The Indiana native also had three games in which he averaged more than 50 yards per punt -- 51.2 yards against West Virginia in the season opener, 50.8 yards against Rice and 50.5 per punt in the season finale against East Carolina.

His numbers also earned him a spot on the C-USA All-Freshman Team selected by the league's 12 coaches.
