Fairland torches Pointers, 74-43
SOUTH POINT, Ohio — Fairland’s Chance Short threw for more than 300 yards for the fourth time this season with six touchdowns, Nathan Campbell went over 200 yards on the ground and the Dragons crashed Homecoming at South Point with a 74-43 football victory Friday night.
South Point went three and out on its first possession, punting away to Fairland’s Nathan Campbell who ran the ball 70 yards the other way for a score.
By the end of the first quarter, the Dragons were in control, 33-13.
By the half, the Dragons had 486 yards of offense and a 55-13 lead while the Pointers had managed four first downs and 95 yards.
Fairland’s defense bottled up South Point’s explosive quarterback Gage Townson, who had minus-33 yards rushing, and was 6-for-17 throwing with two touchdowns at the intermission. Townson would wind up outgaining Short, 366 passing yards to 362.
With a combined 26 penalties and 70 passing attempts from both teams, the contest took three and a half hours to complete.
Fairland led 74-25 late in the third quarter when Dragons head coach Cullen Homolka finally pulled his starters, allowing South Point to put an additional 18 points on the board.
South Point scored its final touchdown when Fairland third-string quarterback Drew Norris threw a pick six on first and 10 with 28 seconds to go.
The next time out, the Dragons took a knee.
Things got testy the later it got and after the clock finally ticked its last, members of the two coaching staffs were exchanging heated words while the few South Point fans remaining lustily booed.
After starting 4-0, South Point has suffered back-to-back blowout losses and is 0-1 in the Ohio Valley Conference, while Fairland improves to 3-3 and 1-0 in the OVC.
Senior Tia Pettigrew was named as the Homecoming queen at halftime. The Homecoming court consisted of Pettigrew, Hannah Carey, Taylor Bradway, Tyra Pettigrew, Madison Riley and Mackenzie Fugitt.
The game ball was delivered to South Point head coach Rick Marcello by the Pointers mascot, who emerged from a HealthNet helicopter that touched down on the 50-yard line just before kickoff.
