Wiggins leads Huntington Prep to victory

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Huntington Prep stayed perfect on ESPN, earning a 56-47 win over New Hampton Prep (Mass.) in the Spalding Hoophall Classic on Sunday at Springfield College's Blake Arena.

In a game that featured two of the top 10 players in the class of 2013, it was No. 1 prospect Andrew Wiggins of Huntington Preps gettign the best of New Hampton's 6-9 Noah Vonleh.

Wiggins finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds while instantly getting Vonleh into foul trouble. Vonleh, New Hampton's leader who signed in the fall to play at Indiana, finished with just nine points and five rebounds. Despite the foul trouble, New Hampton was able to stay in the contest on the ability to knock down three-pointers in key situations.

Vonleh made a three-point midway throught the fouth period to cut Huntington Prep's lead to 45-43, but Xavier Rathan-Mayes followed with a three-pointer of his own to push the lead back to two possessions. Huntington Prep (19-2) then clamped down defensively, not allowing another field goal untl a layup by Travis Jorgenson with 30 seconds left to trim the deficit to five points.

New Hampton would get no closer as the Express hit its last six free throws. Rathan-Mayes provided a fourth-quarter spark, scoring seven of his 13 points. After a 1-for-11 shooting performance in Friday's loss, Rathan-Mayes struggled again before connecting on consecutive three-pointers in the second quarter after New Hampton had taken its first lead on a layup by Tory Miller.

Jorgenson led New Hampton (11-4) with 13 points while Miller totaled 10 points and 10 rebounds.
