Ashland girls beat Boyd County, win trip to state

MOREHEAD -- Ashland is headed back to the Girls Sweet 16 Basketball Tournament.

Allie Slone scored 18 points and Kaylyn Gambill 16 to lead the Kittens past Boyd County, 54-52, in the 16th Region championship game Tuesday night at Morehead State's Ellis T. Johnson Arena.

The Girls Sweet 16 will be held March 13-16 at Western Kentucky's Diddle Arena in Bowling Green. The Kittens will play the Region 10 winner in the first round on March 13.

Ashland (24-6) opened a 16-6 lead after the first period and held off the Lady Lions (26-8) down the stretch to make it two straight regional titles. Boyd County won in 2011. The Kittens went 3-1 against the Lady Lions this season.

Alexis Robinson added 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Kittens.

Emily Stewart paced Boyd County with 17 points. Taylor Wheeler had 14 and Logan Fraley 10.
