WVU wins 15th national rifle title
MORGANTOWN -- West Virginia University has won its 15th national rifle championship.
The Mountaineers won the title on Saturday in Columbus, Ohio, with a final team score of 4,679. Kentucky finished in a close second with a team score of 4,670.
Senior Petra Zublasing swept the individual awards for both smallbore and air rifle.
It's the first national title for the Mountaineers rifle program since 2009.
The rifle team was among five varsity sports dropped by WVU in 2003 in a cost-cutting move. Varsity status was restored the following year, but the team still gets no university funding, surviving on money that comes from the state Legislature, the athletics department and fundraisers.
