Grant Traylor: St. Joe girls rewrite record book

Mar. 10, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

Huntington St. Joe's fifth consecutive Class A championship was a resounding win for the ages.

And many of the momentous feats in the tournament will be logged in the girls basketball record book for years to come.

During Saturday's 73-32 win over St. Marys, the Irish achieved many records of the individual and team variety.

Here's an overview of some of the team feats accomplished this week in Charleston:

Team steals: St. Joe finished with 74 steals in the tournament, shattering the previous record of 60 they set last season.

Margin of victory: After the 41-point win in the finale, Huntington St. Joe finished with an average margin of victory of 44.3 points, eclipsing the previous record of 33.7 by the 2000 Mercer Christian team.

Total 3-point field goals: St. Joe eclipsed tournament 3-point shooting records with 24 made and 75 attempted. Both eclipsed marks the Irish set last season.

Single-game 3-pointers: Against Man in the first round, the Irish hit 10 3-pointers, which tied the mark left by Parkersburg Catholic against Fayetteville in 1997.

Single-game 3-point attempts: With 31 attempts on Saturday, the Irish eclipsed the 2011 mark by Pocahontas County against Wheeling Central.

Now, here's a look at the individual feats set this week:

Assists for a tournament: Mychal Johnson broke the record with 30. The previous record was 26, set by a pair of Mercer Christian players -- Sarah Wilkerson (1996) and Martha Wilkerson (2001).

3-point goals made and attempted: Griffin Dempsey set the new bar for 3-pointers in a tournament with 16, breaking the old mark by Mercer Christian's Sharon Wilkerson (1994) and Wheeling Central's Kayleen Fitzsimmons (2005). Her 32 attempted 3-pointers also broke Fitzsimmons' 2005 mark of 23.

Single-game 3-pointers made and attempted: Dempsey's 26-point performance on Saturday also featured new single-game highs in 3-point goals (7) and attempts (15).

ON TOP OF HER GAME: For the tournament, Mychal Johnson came close to averaging a quadruple-double per game.

In three games, Johnson averaged 17.3 points, 10 assists, 9.0 rebounds and 7.0 steals,

ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAMS: Class A selections included Dempsey, Mychal Johnson and Mychelle Johnson from St. Joe; Amber Evans, Tucker County; Audra Clark, St. Marys; Colleen McCormick, Wheeling Central; Kendra Walker, St. Marys; and Emily Bucon, Wheeling Central.
