Harlem Wizards coming to Fairland
ROME TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- If you missed the Harlem Globetrotters in Huntington recently, you're about to get another opportunity. Well, sort of.
The Fairland Parent Teacher Organization is hosting the Harlem Wizards, the "B" team of the Harlem Globetrotters at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 3, at Fairland High School.
The Wizards will be playing local celebrities including WOWK's Rick Dayton, former MLB pitcher Rick Reed and teachers, including Leroy Baise, Nathan Speed, Jim Roberts and Fairland's own high school boys basketball coach Chad Belville. The money raised at this event will go to the SPARKS campaign. SPARKS stands for Students, Parents, Alumni, Retirees and Kids of Fairland schools.
Bobbie Young is chairperson and overall organizer of the grassroots campaign effort to raise money to build new bleachers, restrooms and concession stands at Fairland's football stadium. According to Jan Wilkes, member of SPARKS and Fairland Elementary PTO, organizers are hoping for a "sell-out" crowd in the 1,500-seat gym.
Advance tickets can be purchased at all Fairland schools or can be reserved by calling PTO officers, Melon Kerstetter at (740) 886-7403 or Leslie Thomas at (740) 886-9622. Tickets for students and senior citizens are $10.00 in advance or $12 at the door. General admission tickets are $12.00 in advance or $15.00 at the gate.
Souvenirs and concessions will be available. The Wizards will also have an autograph session following the event.
