Hurricane boys dominate soccer honorees
HUNTINGTON -- Hurricane's magical boys soccer season did not go unnoticed by those in the Mountain State Athletic Conference.
Six Redskins were named to the 17-man MSAC All-Conference First Team as announced by league commissioner Fred Aldridge over the weekend.
Forward Zach Montebell, midfielders Matthew Hale and Cameron Keenan, defenders Ryan McWatters and Brooks Paine and goalkeeper Noah Blackhurst all were named the elite in the conference following a year in which the team held opponents scoreless for more than 1,600 minutes and achieved a national ranking.
Huntington High defender Patrick DeMoss was also named to the first team as was Cabell Midland midfielder Tyler Kennedy.
Spring Valley midfielder Ty Hall was named an MSAC All-Conference second team selection along with Huntington High midfielder Bill Jones.
The Timberwolves placed three players on the Honorable Mention list while Huntington High, Hurricane and Lincoln County also had selections.
Spring Valley forward T.L. Bryant joined teammates Jacob Massie (midfielder) and Brennan Simpkins (defender) while Huntington High midfielder Forrest McGuire, Lincoln County defender Alex Collins and Hurricane defender Colin Miles also were honorable mention.
Hurricane coach Jim Dagostine was the MSAC Boys Soccer Coach of the Year while George Washington's Zack Claudio was the MSAC Boys Soccer Player of the Year.
On the girls' side, Hurricane had a part in both of the MSAC's highest honors. Head coach Shelly Young was named MSAC Girls Soccer Coach of the Year while midfielder Skye Smith was the MSAC Girls Soccer Co-Player of the Year along with South Charleston's Erin Clark.
Huntington High had three selections on the first team: midfielder Abi Woods, forward Kelsie Burns and defender Taylor Cunningham.
Midfielder Morgan Smith and forward Sami Molina represented Cabell Midland on the first team.
Spring Valley's Leanna Wiles was also a first-team defender. Lincoln County's Ashleigh Tomblin was a first-team forward.
Cabell Midland also had a pair of selections on the second team -- midfielder Jessica Beihl and defender Tara Elswick.
Huntington High goalkeeper Taylor Hickman was a second-team selection along with Spring Valley forward Jenna Dorsey and Hurricane midfielder Deanna Boyer.
Cabell Midland's Kelsey Matthews and Spring Valley's Chelsea Seay were honorable mention selections.
