Marshall mens soccer defeats South Carolina
HURRICANE -- The Marshall Thundering Herd mens soccer team rode two early goals to defeat the University of South Carolina, 2-1, Saturday evening in Hurricane.
Set pieces were the key for the Herd, as Striker Zach Hunter put a free kick on the far post for a goal in the 10th minute of the contest, and defender Nick Eddington volleyed in a corner kick from Andrew Ferguson 11 minutes later.
Jason Chapman got the Gamecocks lone goal in the 76th minute off a corner.
The win propels Marshall to 9-1-1 on the season, and 1-1 in conference play. The Gamecocks drop to 4-6-2 on the season, and 1-3-1 in conference.
The Herd continues to rely on the play of keeper Daniel Withrow, who made five saves on six shots on goal. Overall, South Carolina took 22 shots. Marshall took seven shots, getting three on goal.
The Herd next takes on the University of Kentucky at Hurricane High School at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18.
Swimming
HUNTINGTON -- Marshall University got three event wins in swimming and diving to place second overall in the second annual West Virginia State Games, which took place at Marshall over the weekend.
West Virginia University took first place, and Wheeling Jesuit finished third.
Madison Lawhorn won the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.19, the 10th-fastest in MU history.
Sophomore Kacey Preun won the 200 yard breaststroke, and Lauren Rone took top honors in the one-meter diving event.
"There were many good things this weekend, but we still have a lot to learn," coach Bill Tramel said in a written statement. "We must do a better job collectively with our race execution."
The team next faces Youngstown State at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, at the Fitch Natatorium inside the Cam Henderson Center. Marshall is 10-0 all time against Youngstown State.
Saturday
Men's soccer vs. South Carolina, 7 p.m. at Hurricane High School.
MU women's swimming hosting West Virginia State Games.
Cross Country
EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- Marshall men's and women's teams finished second in their races at the Evansville Invitational.
IUPUI won the seven-team men's meet.
David Caldwell led the men's team in fourth place with an 8K time of 25:45.16. Peter Starnes (26:21.40) and Caleb Bowen (26:26.08) were 10th and 11th, respectively.
Evansville won the five-team women's meet.
Celia Leonard wound up fifth (13:35.60) to pace the Thundering Herd women in the 5K. Leslie Thomas (19:02.23) was seventh and Kelley Mortakis (19:12.64) finished eighth.
Women's Soccer
HURRICANE -- SMU visits Marshall for its Senior Day women's soccer match at 1 p.m., Sunday, at Hurricane High School.
The Mustakes are 6-6-3 for the season and 2-2-3 in Conference USA. Marshall is 6-8-1 and 2-4-1.
Volleyball
HOUSTON -- C-USA co-leader Marshall (16-5, 6-1) takes on Houston (5-13, 4-4) at 2 p.m. Sunday. The Thundering Herd is tied with Tulsa for first place with victories in 13 of its last 14 matches.
