Wayne train keeps rolling
CHAPMANVILLE, W.Va. -- Brandon Spurlock and Mason Hodge are at opposite ends of their Wayne football careers.
They combined to put on a show Friday night at Chapmanville (4-5).
Spurlock, a senior, had 280 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 10 carries, while Hodge, a sophomore, scored touchdowns receiving, rushing, and on a kick return as the Pioneers rolled to a 55-7 win over the Tigers.
Class AA No. 1 Wayne (9-0) rolled up 580 yards of offense, overcoming poor field position en route to the big win.
"We were able to block them," Wayne coach Tom Harmon said. "Generally when that happens, all kinds of plays seem to work."
Work might be an understatement. The Pioneers had 334 yards rushing on 15 attempts before halftime, scoring on 94 and 85 yard drives in less than five plays.
Spurlock, who now has 1,399 yards this season, scored untouched on the second play of the game from 65 yards out. He added an 84-yard run where he was tackled at the 1, and also had runs of 37 and 61 in the first half.
Harmon said the career high yardage for Spurlock had more to do with field position than playing any better than usual.
Spurlock got his final rushing attempt with 5:01 left in the second quarter.
"He has been exceptional all year," Harmon said. "Brandon would be the first to tell you the other guys carrying their loads opens up those opportunities."
Hodge might have had the highlight run of the night. The 230-pound wingback turned the corner on a sweep with just DaShawn Alexander, son of former WVU great Robert Alexander, standing in his way to the end zone. Hodge accelerated into the 190-pound Alexander, knocking him to the ground, and strolling in for a touchdown from 30 yards out.
"He's a force to be reckoned with," Harmon said of Hodge. "His abilities are endless, especially for his size.
"Mason is a difference maker on both sides of the ball."
Hodge added a 17-yard touchdown catch from Grant Ferguson and an 81-yard kickoff return for a score to open the second half.
Wayne led 36-0 at half and 55-0 after three quarters.
The Pioneers will look for their seventh unbeaten regular season under Harmon when it plays host to Bluefield for Senior Night next week.
"Each week brings a new challenge," Harmon said.
