Cabell Midland goes 10-0

ONA -- David Gaydosz and Lowell Farley each ran for two touchdowns to power Cabell Midland past Hurricane, 31-13, in the regular-season finale for both Class AAA schools Friday night at Cabell Midland.
The Senior Night secured the first 10-0 record in school history for the Knights, who take a No. 1 ranking into the West Virginia playoffs next week.
"Everyone's excited," Cabell Midland coach Luke Salmons said. "It's good to get there. The focus was on Hurricane. We got through. This shows the kids what hard work will do. It's special because there's been a lot of good kids here. There were a lot of intangibles."
Pairings for the playoffs will be announced Sunday. The Knights locked up home field throughout.
"10-0. It's amazing," said Farley, one of the 19 seniors introduced prior to the game. "We're ecstatic. Everyone in the locker room is going crazy. We'll enjoy it tonight, then it's back to work. Everyone's 0-0 now. It's ride or die."
Hurricane (6-4) took the opening kickoff and drove 77 yards in 14 plays to score. Michael Molina missed a 34-yard field goal, but the Knights got called for running into the kicker. That set up a 4th-and-2 at the Cabell Midland 12 and the home team then jumped offsides to give Hurricane a first down.
Quarterback Austin Hensley scored on a 7-yard run on the next play.
After that, the Knights held the Redskins and their spread attack in check. Hensley did complete 17 of 22 for 225 yards to go over 2,100 yards for the season to go along with 21 TD passes. He had two picked off.
"The first drive we were a little slow," Knights senior linebacker Nick Boone said. "We talked to ourselves, made adjustments, got disciplined and did the job."
"Penalties killed us," Salmons said. "We never got into a rhythm. We can't play like that in the playoffs."
Hurricane should qualify for postseason, but likely is down for a first-round road game.
Salmons started Kasey Thomas at quarterback and the junior nearly went the distance. Coy Pettit, a senior, saw his first action in the fourth period.
"Coy had a thumb issue," Salmons said. "Kasey gives us another dimension. Him, David, Lowell and Stephen (Matthews) gives us four good guys."
Gaydosz, the heralded transfer from Winfield, led the Knights with 114 yards on 15 carries. His first TD came on a 33-yard burst up the middle against a stacked Hurricane defense. Farley added 92 on 13 attempts.
Even though Hensley went over 200 yards, Salmons like the job the defense did after the first drive.
"We made adjustments," he said. "He's a good quarterback. We were able to get pressure on him."
In the third quarter, Cabell Midland and Hurricane got into a shoving match after a run and Knights offensive tackle Kurt Jones got ejected. His status for the next week isn't know, but it's likely he'll have to sit out.
"To win on Senior Night in the last (regular-season) game at home is special," Farley said. "But we're not done."
