MU visits WVU in Morgantown
MORGANTOWN -- Marshall University plays West Virginia University in a 6 p.m. Wednesday baseball game at Hawley Field.
Marshall improved its record to 18-20 with last week's four-game sweep of WVU Tech and has won five straight overall.
Thundering Herd freshman centerfielder Corey Bird leads the team with a .288 batting average.
Junior first baseman T.J. Diffenderfer has a .269 average and 20 runs batted in.
Lance Elder, a sophomore right-hander, gets the start on the pitching mound. Elder has no decisions in two starts this season. His earned run average is 2.00 for 18.0 innings.
West Virginia took a 19-17 record in a Tuesday home game against Maryland. The Mountaineers took two of three Big 12 Conference games last weekend at Oklahoma.
Leading hitters for the Mountaineers are Bobby Boyd (.383), Billy Fleming (.353) and Ryan McBroom (.331). McBroom has six home runs and 36 RBIs.
WVU's starting pitcher wasn't announced Tuesday.
Another game between the state rivals is scheduled April 30 at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston.
