High drama at end of C-K C team victory
HUNTINGTON -- The Ceredo-Kenova C team used some drama Saturday to finish its Tri-State Youth Football League season undefeated.
Clayton Sharp threw a 24-yard TD pass to Deuce Vance with 16 seconds left to pull the Wonders into a 20-20 tie with Chesapeake in the Turf Bowl's C Division title game at Marshall's Joan C. Edwards Stadium. Sharp then ran in the 2-point conversion to give C-K a 22-20 victory and cap a perfect season at 11-0.
During the regular season, C-K won at Chesapeake, 26-6.
Huntington's Kirtley aces Twin Silos' No. 6
LAVALETTE -- Mike Kirtley of Huntington recorded his second hole-in-one of the year Friday. He made the ace on the sixth hole at Twin Silos at Lavalette. He used a driver on the 162-yard par 3. Ferrell Sowards and Rick James witnessed the ace, the third of Kirtley's career.
Fite wins match play tournament again
HUNTINGTON -- Brian Fite led the qualifying Saturday and won four matches Sunday to become the first three-time Harrell Memorial Match Games champion.
Fite, one of several scratch entries in the handicap tournament, shot 960 to lead the qualifier. Chip Gue was second with 962. The top 16 qualifiers advanced to match play on Sunday. Format was two games, total pins.
Fite recorded wins over Randy Wilson, Dale Morrison, Ryan Bleyle and Jesse Wolowinski. Fite fired games of 268 and 246 for a 514 and Wolowinski shot 414.
In earlier matches, Fite had two-game totals of 492 in the round of 16, 462 in the quarterfinals and 460 in the semifinals.
Huntington's Perez wins bout in Zanesville
ZANESVILLE, Ohio -- Juan Perez, a student at Huntington Middle School, won his bout Saturday night during an amateur show. He represents Subzero Boxing Team of Huntington and beat Brice Guthrie of Coshocton, Ohio, to get his second win.
Subzero Boxing will have several team members competing in the Kentucky/West Virginia Silver Gloves Tournament on Saturday in Ashland. If anyone's interested in boxing or supporting the youth, contact coach Noah Kirk at 606-923-1730.
