W.Va.'s Super Six set
CHARLESTON -- Felix Mollett scored on a 2-yard run as the third quarter ended Saturday afternoon and No. 2 George Washington made it stand up for a 19-17 victory over No. 6 University in a Class AAA football semifinal game at Laidley Field.
The Patriots (12-1), winners of 11 in a row, face No. 1 South Charleston (13-0) in the finals at noon Saturday at Wheeling Island Stadium. South Charleston won the regular-season meeting, 13-12.
George Washington got a 62-yard scoring pass from Taylor Norman to Roland Willis and Mollett's touchdown run to take the lead for good.
The University Hawks (11-2) were led by the running tandem of Dominique Dixon (19 carries, 90 yards, TD) and Brandon Tucker (19 carries, 86 yards, TD).
Madonna 27, St. Marys 6
ST. MARYS, W.Va. -- No. 7 Madonna put on a defensive showcase Saturday afternoon at Imlay Field, holding No. 6 St. Marys to only 97 yards on 37 carries and eliminating the host Blue Devils from the Class A playoffs.
The Blue Dons, now 13-0, opened the scoring on a 40-yard pass from quarterback Max Nogay to Connor Arlia with 7:51 left in the opening quarter and never looked back.
Madonna was paced by the running of Nogay, who carried the football 16 times for 68 yards, and the passing of backup quarterback Sal Conti, who completed 4-of-9 attempts for 66 yards and one touchdown.
St. Marys' only score came on a 5-yard run by senior Derek Spitzer.
Magnolia 13,
James Monroe 7
NEW MARTINSVILLE, W.Va. -- Everything James Monroe could do, the Magnolia Blue Eagles could do just a little bit better. That led to the home team atoning for last year's playoff loss to the Mavericks of Monroe County with a 13-7 win in Saturday's Class AA semifinal game.
Stingray Bates, a junior running back for Magnolia, ran for 128 yards in 36 carries as the Blue Eagles (10-3) put together 330 total yards on their visitors from the other end of the state.
Williamstown 14, Wheeling Central 13
WILLIAMSTOWN, W.Va. -- Williamstown knocked off the four-time defending Class A state champion in the semifinals.
Wheeling Central missed an extra point and a 22-yard field goal try in the fourth quarter.
