New league drafts ex-Marshall players
A pair of former Marshall University standouts were selected in Saturday's inaugural All American Football League draft.
Quarterback Eric Kresser, who helped lead the Thundering Herd to the 1996 Division I-AA national championship was the Florida franchise's first round pick. Kresser, who played for the NFL's Cincinnati Bengals following his Thundering Herd career, was the draft's fourth overall selection.
Florida also drafted former Marshall cornerback Chris Hawkins. After transferring from North Carolina, Hawkins anchored the Herd secondary in 2005.
The All American Football League will debut in April, filling a void created when the NFL shut down NFL Europe after 16 seasons.
With teams in Detroit; Little Rock, Ark; Gainesville, Fla.; Birmingham, Ala.; Knoxville, Tenn.; and a yet-to-be-determined city in Texas, the league hopes to build on fans' identification with former collegiate stars.
