MU baseball opens season with a pair of wins
WINSTON SALEM, N.C. -- Marshall baseball season opened Friday with the Thundering Herd recording a pair of victories at the Wake Forest Tournament.
Marshall defeated Akron, 9-3, in its first game with outfielder Nate Lape hitting a two-run home run.
Catcher Kevin Shackelford drove in two runs with a double. Shackelford had three RBIs in the game.
Third baseman David Gomez and first baseman Josh Valle both had two hits. Valle also had two RBIs.
Arik Sikula, a sophomore from Hurricane, made his first start as a pitcher and earned the victory. Sikula went five innings.
Marshall also beat Old Dominion, 3-2.
Shortstop Adam Yeager went 3-for-3 with a triple and a pair of singles. Freshman Thor Meeks of Hurricane blasted his first homer.
Herd left-hander Ryan Kiel pitched five innings and was the winner.
Marshall has two more games today. The Herd meets Old Dominion at 11 a.m. and Wake Forest at 2:30 p.m.
