MU women beat WV Wesleyan

November 02, 2009 @ 12:15 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Marshall took advantage of West Virginia Wesleyan turnovers Sunday in a 73-41 women's basketball exhibition victory in Cam Henderson Center.

West Virginia Wesleyan turned the ball over 34 times that led to 44 points for the Thundering Herd. Marshall had 18 steals, led by 5-foot point guard Tania Walters with seven and Alaya Mitchell with five.

"I thought we had a lot of young kids step up and do some really good things and I'm very happy with our point guards and the way they played and I thought that their pressure was the difference in the game," Marshall head coach Royce Chadwick said.

Angelica Harris triggered a 10-0 run for the Herd to break out of a tie with 13:41 remaining in the first half. Walters had three steals during the run.

West Virginia Wesleyan got back within nine points before Chantelle Handy scored a pair of Marshall baskets that sent the Herd into halftime leading, 34-23.

Marshall used a 21-0 spurt in the second half to pull safely away.

Forward Tynikki Crook led Marshall with 15 points and nine rebounds.

"Tynikki's really good," Chadwick said. "She's a girl that can put a double-double up any night, if she would have hit some free throws tonight she would have had big numbers, but she didn't play a ton of minutes but I felt like when she was out there she made something happen."

Handy was in early foul trouble and scored 10. Walters had eight points, four rebounds and three assists. Mitchell and Mystee Dale both added eight points.

West Virginia Wesleyan was led by Angela Tassari who posted nine points and seven rebounds.

Marshall opens the season Nov. 13 at home against Appalachian State.
