South Point girls defeat HHS, 7-6

HUNTINGTON -- It took extra innings, but South Point was able to outlast Huntington High on the road Tuesday in softball, 7-6.

Bri Whaley had a home run and two RBIs for the Pointers while Haley Rawlins went 2-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs.

Madison Howell hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth for the Highlanders. Madison Haymaker also left the yard in a 3-for-4 outing, but it wasn't enough.

The Highlanders (11-16) next play Spring Valley at Cabell Midland in sectional competition Wednesday.

HUNTINGTON ST. JOE 15, IRONTON ST. JOE 4: After starting the season 1-6, and not having a softball team in 2012, Huntington St. Joe, now 10-8, put an exclamation point on the 2013 regular season with a mercy rule win over Ironton St. Joe that only lasted three innings Tuesday.

The Irish got three hits and 8 RBIs from Jennifer Sang, who also pitched for Huntington St. Joe, in the 15-5 win over the Flyers. Jamila McMurray also went 2-3 from the plate and knocked in three runs for the Irish.

Huntington St. Joe plays Charleston Catholic at 5:30 p.m. in a sectional game at Buffalo in Putnam County Wednesday. The winner will play Buffalo at 7:30 p.m.

FAIRLAND 2, WELLSTON 1: Wellston lead-off hitter Jordan Davis hit a home run in her first at-bat against Fairland ace Chandler Fulks Tuesday night.

It was the only run Wellston would get, and Fulks would strike Davis out in her other three at-bats en route to a 2-1 win for the Dragons.

Chelsey Stanley had what turned out to be the game-winning hit for Fairland in the top of the sixth, a solo home run to right field.

The Dragons (16-6) host Ironton for senior night Wednesday at 5 p.m.
