Memphis defeats Herd, 8-5
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Memphis defeated Marshall University, 8-5, in a Sunday baseball game that completed a three-game weekend sweep for the Tigers at FedExPark.
Tucker Tubbs of the Tigers was 3-for-5 with a three-run home run and five runs batted in.
Colton Simbeck also homered for Memphis, which is 30-19 overall and 12-9 in Conference USA.
Marshall allowed a 3-0 lead to slip away against Memphis starting pitcher Alex Gunn, who lasted just two innings. Heath Hatfield (3-2) out of the Memphis bullpen picked up the win while Jonathan Van Eaton notched his 10th save of the season.
Isaac Ballou walked and scored an unearned run for Marshall in the first inning.
Gray Stafford had an RBI single when Marshall (18-29, 5-13) put up two runs in the second inning. Eric Escobedo singled and scored on a ground-out in the third inning.
Tubbs got Memphis going with a three-run homer to left field in the third inning and Simbeck's homer in the fourth inning put the Tigers ahead.
Stafford had a solo homer in the sixth inning and finished the game 2-for-4.
Marshall starter Michael Taylor (3-5) pitched five innings and gave up six runs. Reliever Ryan Hopkins took the loss.
The Herd is idle until Friday when East Carolina comes to Epling Stadium in Beckley for a 7 p.m. contest.
