MU softball tops UTEP, 8-3
HUNTINGTON -- Senior Day was successful for the Marshall University softball team.
Family members of Marshall's six seniors threw out the ceremonial first pitch Sunday and sent the Thundering Herd on the way to an 8-3 victory over UTEP before a turnout of 241 spectators at Dot Hicks Field.
The seniors are Jessica Ferrick, Jazmine Valle, Alysia Hively, Ashley Gue, Andi Williamson and Bri Anna Hope.
Marshall (32-20, 13-10) moves on to the Conference USA tournament beginning Thursday at Tulsa. Marshall will face East Carolina in a matchup of teams seeded Nos. 4 and 5 in the first round. The Pirates swept a three-game series from the Herd in the regular season.
Only eight of the nine C-USA teams make the tournament and UTEP (13-34, 2-20) is left out.
Marshall got off to a fast start with three runs in the first inning when Ferrick had an RBI single.
Valle had an RBI double in the second inning to make it 4-0.
Raquel Escareno smashed a two-run home run out of the park in the third inning that padded the margin to six runs.
That was more than enough cushion for Williamson, who posted her 29th pitching victory of the season (29-16) despite allowing 11 hits and walking three.
Kaelynn Greene of the Herd reached base on an error in the fourth inning and stole her way around. Gue walked, stole second and third and scored on a throwing error.
UTEP scored in the fourth and fifth innings.
