Herd women open season with win

BOONE, N.C. -- Marshall rallied from five points behind with 2:32 left to play Friday night and opened the women's basketball season with a 67-65 victory against Appalachian State in the Holmes Center.

Alix Barnette led the Thundering Herd comeback with five late points.

Barnette made a 3-point shot that cut the deficit to two with 2:08 remaining and Chantelle Handy's layp tied the game, 64-64.

Tynikki Crook broke the tie by making a foul shot with 30 seconds to go, giving Marshall its first lead since the first half.

Appalachian State missed a shot with about 10 seconds remaining before Barnette hit a pair of foul shots for a three-point lead with five seconds left.

The Mountaineeers had another chance when Frances Hernandez was fouled by Barnette on a final-second 3-point attempt. Hernandez made one of three foul shots.

"It nice to get a road win, but we played badly for the first 35 minutes before playing well in the last five," Marshall head coach Royce Chadwick said. "We have a lot to work on and a lot of improvement needed, but whether you win by 75 or by one, its still a win."

Crook led Marshall with 16 points and six rebounds. Barnette scored 14 and Alyssa Hammond added 13. Casey Baker had eight assists and four steals.

Sade Means scored 17 for the Mountaineers and Hernandez scored 13.

Appalachian State pulled away 31-23 late in the first half.

Crook took over after halftime with 12 points in the first 6:17 of the second period and the Herd got within 40-39 with 14:11 left to play.

The Mountaineers regained an eight-point advantage when Hernandez connected on 3-pointers in consecutive possessions with five minutes left before Marshall made its late run.

Marshall made 53.3 percent of its shots in the second half.
