Fisher WVGA Player of the Year

CHARLESTON -- Tim Fisher of Staats Mills received the West Virginia Player of the Year award Friday night during the West Virginia Golf Association's banquet at Berry Hills Country Club.

Fisher racked up 870 points during the 2008 season to end Pat Carter's 13-year dominance of the coveted award named in honor of George Cobb. Fisher won the West Virginia Amateur by a shot over Anthony Reale, finished fourth overall and low amateur in the West Virginia Open, won the West Virginia Four Ball with partner Joe Gossett and also won the U.S. Mid-Am qualifier at Guyan.

Carter, who won the West Virginia Mid-Am for the fourth time in five years, was runnerup with 490 points.

Steve Fox of Huntington won the Senior Player of the Year. Fox finished runner-up in the stroke play and match play divisions in the West Virginia Senior Amateur.

Carson Schambach of Glen Dale is the Junior Player of the Year. He just completed the fall portion of his freshman season for the Marshall golf team. Schambach finished second in the West Virginia Junior Amateur and made the semifinals in the West Virginia Junior Match Play.

Nicolle-Flood Sawczyszyn of Morgantown earned the first Female Player of the Year honor. This category evolved with the marger of the men's and women's associations. The Maxine Gilmore Trophy was donated to the WVGA by the family to recognize the top female player in the Mountain State. Flood-Sawczyszyn big moment came with a four-shot win in the West Virginia Women's Amateur. She finished 1 under, making her the first female to ever finish in the red.

Caroline Ramsey of Bridgeport won Women's Senior Player of the Year. She got most of her points by winning the West Virginia Women's Senior Amateur.

Brooke Bellomy of Ona is the Girls Junior Player of the Year. Bellomy, who plays for Cabell Midland High School, won her flight in the West Virginia Junior Amateur.

On the pro side, Barry Evans, head pro at Berry Hills, was No. 1 on the West Virginia PGA Points List. He won the West Virginia Open and Stonewall Classic on the Palmer Course at Stonewall Jackson Resort. Scott Davis, pro from Hurricane, led the seniors in pros. Jason Robinson topped the Apprentice list.
