Huntington's Fox repeats as WV senior amateur champion
DANIELS, W.Va. -- Steve Fox of Huntington defended his title to win the 52nd West Virginia Senior Amateur Championship golf tournament Wednesday on the Cobb Course at the Resort at Glade Springs.
Fox captured his fifth Senior Amateur championship in the tournament that began Monday with an 18-hole stroke play qualifier then went into match play competition. Fox carded a 4-over-par 76 in qualifying and swept through five matches.
He took out Rich Tetrick of Charleston in the Round of 32, Phil Zambos of Huntington in the Round of 16, David Jude from Kermit, W.Va., in the quarterfinals and Richard Moore of Spencer, W.Va., in the semifinals.
The championship match was a family affair with Fox besting his brother-in-law, Harold Payne of Hurricane, 3 and 1.
Payne, a West Virginia Golf Hall of Fame member, is also a past Senior Amateur champion.
Jim Grimmett from Davin, W.Va., was medalist in qualifying with a 2-under 70. Grimmett advanced to the Round of 16 in match play.
Charlie Stone of Huntington was the Gold Division (age 70 and older) champion. Stone downed Spot Leach of Shady Spring in the finals, 3 and 2.
Silver Division (age 60-69) champion Tom Brown from Beckley beat Dick Bolen of Morgantown for the title, 4 and 3.
