Fairland piles up 615 yards, beats Tolsia

September 12, 2009 @ 12:00 AM

PROCTORVILLE, Ohio -- Any coach will tell you its important for a team to be big and strong. However, in high school perhaps the most important ingredient is speed.

One thing for certain is Fairland has speed.

The lightning-quick Dragons accounted for a staggering 615 yards of total offense Friday night in a 52-14 trouncing of Tolsia.

"Speed kills," Fairland head coach Dave Carroll said. "You can have all the big guys you want up front, but when it boils down to it you need to have speed. We have quick guys in the backfield and up front."

In the opening quarter, the Dragons (2-1) got off to a slow start, until quarterback Chad Fisher ran 46 yards for a touchdown out of a shotgun formation.

Fisher also had a big night in the air and Fairland's receivers used their speed to get past the Rebels' secondary on a regular basis.

On the Dragons next possession, Fisher connected with receiver Kyle Taubenheim for a 94-yard touchdown.

After a Tolsia (0-2) fumble, Fisher found Tyler Duty for a 41-yard touchdown reception.

The Rebel offense turned the ball over again, giving the ball back to Fairland.

Just before halftime, Fisher threw his third touchdown pass, this one 53 yards to Matt Bloomfield and the Dragons had a 26-6 lead.

In the second half things continued to go Fairland's way.

Early in the third quarter, Bloomfield scored on a 61-yard run.

After another Fisher touchdown run, Tanner Sowards broke away from the Rebel defense for a 89-yard score.

Finally, reserve Eric Riley joined the party by running for an 86-yard touchdown, capping off a close to perfect Fairland offensive display.

Fisher played a big role in Fairland's offensive display accounting for 215 passing yards and rushing for 90 yards.

Carroll knows having Fisher at quarterback is a luxury.

"He's a dual threat," he said. "He can score, and he can play with his arm and legs. It's great to have a kid with that caliber of talent to be able to do that."

The Dragons finished with two players rushing for more than 100 yards -- Bloomfield 101 on seven carries and Sowards getting 101 yards on three attempts.

Tolsia's Virgil Simmons ran seven times for 102 yards.
