Midland whips Winfield
WINFIELD, W.Va. -- Winfield's nickname might be the Generals, but the best general on the field Friday night was Cabell Midland's Michael Brumfield.
Brumfield finished the game 18 of 27 passing for 240 yards and accounted for all four Cabell Midland touchdowns in a 28-14 win at Winfield.
"I was really proud of the way we played for three quarters," Cabell Midland coach Chip McMillian said. "The first, second and fourth we stepped up and played really well. I told the team that for the first time, we saw senior leadership step up in the fourth quarter."
After Winfield cut a 21-point lead to seven, Brumfield led the Knights on a 12-play, 75-yard drive to push the lead back to two scores and silence the fired up crowd at Generals Stadium.
Brumfield capped the drive by hooking up with Tyler Anderson on a 22-yard touchdown pass with 8:53 left in the fourth quarter.
"I got the whole team behind me and I said follow me and I'll get us there," Brumfield said. "It feels really good."
Anderson proved to be Brumfield's favorite target on the night. When the Knights needed a big play, the duo found each other and pushed the team downfield.
Anderson finished with eight catches for 85 yards and two scores. More impressively, many of his catches came across the middle in traffic.
"Tyler Anderson had 10,000 -- he had all kinds of good catches for us," Brumfield said. "I felt sorry for him because I led him up in the air in the middle, but he made crucial catches. We couldn't have done it without him."
While the offense was strong, the play of the defense was just as important down the stretch.
Trailing by two scores late, Winfield drove inside the Cabell Midland 10-yard line, but Brumfield got his hands on Luke Miller's pass and Shannon Scaggs picked it out of the air to thwart the rally.
Scaggs then recorded his second interception in the fourth quarter just minutes later to seal the win for the Knights.
"Shannon made some big plays when he had to and our defensive front got some heat on the quarterback which helps a lot," McMillian said. "We just have to get better from here."
Cabell Midland led 21-14 heading into the fourth quarter after Winfield rallied with a pair of scores within minutes to open the second half.
Winfield took the opening kick of the second half and marched 60 yards with Josh Clark scoring on a 21-yard run to cut the Knights' lead to 21-7.
The next Cabell Midland drive ended with a blocked a punt, and Clark followed with his second touchdown in as many carries to slice the lead in half and send the Winfield fans into a frenzy before the Knights regained control. Clark led the Generals with 43 yards on 17 carries and two scores.
"In the third, I thought we were feeling our oats a little bit," McMillian said. "We thought we were good and that Winfield was going to lay down for us and they didn't. They came out with fire and tested us, but I'm glad with the way we stepped up defensively in the fourth."
After the first 24 minutes, it appeared Cabell Midland would run away with the win as the Generals had no answer for Brumfield.
The Knights' quarterback completed six of his first seven passes, including scoring tosses of 59 yards to Zack Hardman and six yards to Anderson to stake Cabell Midland to an early lead. Brumfield then added a 2-yard plunge to push the lead to 21-0 at the break.
Despite the scoring run by Brumfield, the Knights struggled to establish a ground game. Cabell Midland finished with just 13 yards rushing on 30 carries, including a 25-yard team loss on the blocked punt.
Cabell Midland (2-0) travels to Riverside next week while Winfield (1-2) travels to Parkersburg South.
