Herd blanks Penn State in soccer, 1-0
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Jira Cooley's second-half goal gave Marshall a 1-0 win over Penn State in a men's soccer exhibition match Tuesday night at Jeffrey Field.
Cooley's goal came in the 59th minute with an assist from Kendall Sutton.
Thundering Herd goalkeeper Greg Walter, who is from Slippery Rock, Pa., had four saves to get the shutout.
"We were going against a school that is well-known and very talented," Marshall coach Bob Gray said. "I'm very pleased with our team's effort. We were able to play a variety of guys especially getting playing time for our freshmen."
Marshall (1-1) wraps up the exhibition season Friday when it meets VMI at 3 p.m. at Sam Hood Field. The Herd lost to the University of Rio Grande, 1-0, in the first exhibition.
Penn State, which has eight starters back, was seeing its first action of the 2008 season.
