Herd volleyball seeks leadership from seniors
HUNTINGTON -- Marshall's volleyball team is looking for leadership from senior players Jalicia Ross and Taylor Tanner who are holdovers from 2005 when the Thundering Herd represented Conference USA in the NCAA tournament.
They are the only seniors on a squad that won last season's C-USA regular season with a 15-1 record.
Joining Ross and Tanner are two juniors, four sophomores and five freshmen.
Marshall opens its season today against Tennessee Tech in the University of Cincinnati Tournament.
Ross posted career-best statistics last season with 296 kills and 94 blocks while earning a spot on the All C-USA second team.
Tanner contributed off the bench with her service and passing ability.
Kristin Marcum is a junior who contributed 158 kills, 309 digs and a team-high 61 service aces last season. Junior Emily Sullivan was used effectively as a situational player.
C-USA Freshman of the Year and all-conference second team selection Elizabeth Fleming was ranked 13th nationally with 13.35 assists per game.
Other members of the sophomore class are Kelley Bugler, Elizabeth Herman and Layne Kehl.
Freshman playes are Susan Waldie, Meredith O'Malley, Cameron Yoho, Megan Carlson and Jessica Dhoore.
