Braves rally for 6-4 win over Reds

July 31, 2010 @ 12:00 AM

CINCINNATI -- Jason Heyward doubled home two runs with two outs in the 10th inning Friday night, rallying the Atlanta Braves to 6-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds that restored a little of their rapidly vanishing lead in the NL East.

Atlanta moved 3 1/2 games ahead of second-place Philadelphia, which lost to Washington 8-1 in Roy Oswalt's debut with the Phillies.

Reds closer Francisco Cordero (3-4) walked two batters in the 10th. Heyward worked the count full, then hit a sinking liner that diving left fielder Jonny Gomes couldn't catch, allowing both runners to score.

DIAMONDBACKS 9, METS 6: Kelly Johnson and Miguel Montero homered in a five-run sixth inning, and the Arizona Diamondbacks stopped a seven-game losing streak with a 9-6 victory over the New York Mets.

ASTROS 5, BREWERS 0: J.A. Happ allowed two hits over six innings in his Houston debut and the Astros beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-0.

NATIONALS 8, PHILLIES 1: Roy Oswalt's first game as a Philadelphia Phillie left ample room for improvement.

Craig Stammen carried a shutout into the seventh inning and the Washington Nationals roughed up Oswalt in his Philadelphia debut, halting the Phillies' eight-game winning streak with an 8-1 victory.

RAYS 3, YANKEES 2: There's no secret to the success of the Tampa Bay Rays.

Strong starting pitching and a better than expected bullpen, along with sturdy defense and just enough offense keyed a blazing start in April. Now they're using the same formula to close in on the AL East-leading New York Yankees after fading badly in the standings in June.

Right-hander Wade Davis shrugged off a rocky start to pitch seven innings and Matt Joyce hit a three-run homer Friday night, leading the surging Rays over the Yankees 3-2.

Tampa Bay forced Alex Rodriguez to wait at least one more day to join the 600-home run club and matched its longest winning streak of the season at seven games. The Rays also pulled within one game of the AL East-leading Yankees with their 11th win in 12 home games.

TWINS 5, MARINERS 3: Matt Capps worked a scoreless ninth inning for a save in his first appearance with the Minnesota Twins, preserving a 5-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners.

BLUE JAYS 8, INDIANS 1: Jose Bautista doesn't want to get traded by Toronto. The way he's hitting right now, his Blue Jays teammates are just as eager to keep him around.

Bautista hit a grand slam, his major league-leading 31st home run, Fred Lewis added a solo shot and the Blue Jays beat the Cleveland Indians 8-1.

TIGERS 6, RED SOX 5: Jhonny Peralta hit two homers in his first game since being traded and the struggling Detroit Tigers withstood a grand slam by David Ortiz in the ninth inning and beat the Boston Red Sox.
