Barboursville girls beat Virginia, advance to semifinals

August 01, 2010 @ 12:00 AM

WARNER ROBINS, Ga. -- Barboursville's 11-12 softball team is moving on to single-elimination play in the Little League Softball Southeastern Regional after a 3-2 win over Bridgewater (Va.) on Saturday afternoon at Little League Southeast Park.

After jumping to a 3-0 lead, West Virginia's state champions had to hang on late to earn the victory.

Virginia scored on an error in the fifth to cut the lead to two before mounting a rally in the sixth.

Olivia Cook tripled to right field to start the rally then scored to make it a 3-2 game following a double by Alexa Sheets.

Sheets moved to third on a groundout to set up an exciting finish. On a ground ball, Sheets was tagged out between third and home to end the game and send Barboursville into the semifinals.

Barboursville jumped out to a 2-0 lead after plating individual runs in each of the first two innings.

Emily Wilmink's groundout scored Jenna Marsh to produce the game's first run in the first and another groundout offered the second West Virginia run to give the team the early cushion.

The lead ballooned to 3-0 in the bottom of the third when Marsh scored on a passed ball.

Barboursville's win and Tennessee's win over Florida earlier in the day created a three-way tie atop the Pool A standings.

Per Little League rules, the tiebreaker comes down to runs allowed divided by innings played.

Florida is the Pool A champion after allowing just seven runs in 18 innings. Barboursville is the Pool A runner-up after giving up 13 runs in 18 innings. Tennessee ended up as the hard-luck loser in the scenario after giving up 15 runs in 18 innings.

As the Pool A runner-up, Barboursville will take on the Pool B champion at 5 p.m. on Sunday. The final game of pool play features Warner Robins (Ga.) and Wilkes County (N.C.) with the winner clinching the Pool B crown.
