Area tournament season offers juniors opportunity to compete
All right junior golfers. Tournament season is here for you and you've got several options.
The Tri-State Junior Tour begins June 10 at Riviera Country Club. Other tournament dates are June 17, Ironton Country Club; June 24, Sugarwood Golf Club; June 28, Elks Country Club; July 6, Twin Silos at Lavalette; July 12, Bellefonte Country Club; July 22, Shawnee State Park; and July 30, Guyan Golf and Country Club. Check area courses for entry forms.
Tom Cooksey is back with the Eastern Kentucky Junior Golf Association. Tournament dates are June 7, Sandy Creek Golf Course; June 14, Stonecrest Golf Course, Prestonsburg; June 21, River Bend, Argillite; June 28, Eagle Trace, Morehead; July 6, Mt. Sterling Country Club, Mt. Sterling; July 12, Paintsville Country Club; July 19, Raven Rock Golf Club, Jenkins; July 26, Hidden Cove, Grayson; and Aug. 2, Bellefonte Country Club.
The West Virginia Golf Association has the Top Flite Junior Tour. The first event is June 7 at Brideport Country Club. The tour visits Riverside Golf Club in Mason on June 16 and Sugarwood Golf Club in Lavalette on July 13. The Tour Championship will be July 19 at Parkersburg Country Club. The West Virginia Junior Amateur will be contested July 7-8 at Guyan. Brian Anania of Hurricane is defending champion. Brooke Bellomy of Ona is defending girls champion. Anania won the Junior Match Play title in May. West Virginia will be host for the Mid-Atlantic Invitational on July 24-25 at Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport. The top eight golfers from West Virginia, Virginia and Maryland meet in a 36-hole event. Team Maryland won last year.
The AJGA returns June 22-25 for the Natural Resource Partners Bluegrass Junior at Bellefonte Country Club. Qualifier is Monday, junior-am is Tuesday and tournament is Wednesday through Friday. After the second round, the field will be cut to low 40 percent and ties. Local players in the field to date are Thomas Dransfeld, Huntington; Andrew Holtzapfel, Ironton; Jeffrey Meade, Ashland; and Brooke Bellomy, Ona.
CLARK WINS: Sleepy Hollow Golf Club pro Jonathan Clark needed a playoff to win low pro in the Sam Snead Festival held May 24-26 at The Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs. The former Marshall standout started with a 5-under 66 in round one on the Meadows Course. His card showed eight birdies and three bogeys.
Clark posted a 2-under 70 in round two on the Greenbrier course and opened a 7-shot lead over Brad Westfall. Clark had five birdies and three bogeys in that round. The final round was on the Greenbrier Sporting Club's Snead Course and Clark carded 75 to 68 for Westfall. The two tied at 211 went to a playoff. They played No. 1 on the Greenbrier course and Clark, after a booming drive, made par to bogey for Westfall and he won. In the team standings, Westfall's team won the net title with a 48 under total.
TRI-STATE PGA: Craig Burner and Jason Robinson of Edgewood Country Club and Barry Evans and Jon Stricker of Berry Hills Country Club tied for sixth in the Tri-State PGA's Head Professional/Assistant Professional tournament on June 1 at Shannopin Country Club in Pittsburgh. Clark and Jimmy Harrison tied for 13th. On Monday and Tuesday, the Tri-State stop is the Tri-State Open at New Castle Country Club.
SENIOR SERIES: West Virginia Senior Series makes a stop at Twin Silos at Lavalette on June 17. Entry deadline is June 10. Visit www.wvga.org and go under championship schedule to find entry form. Fee is $55.
MAHAR HONORED: The PGA recently elected Rich Mahar, pro at Sandy Creek Golf Course in Ashland, into the PGA Quarter Century Club, which recognizes individuals who have been PGA members for 25 years or more. Mahar is one of 33 pros to receive this honor.
MARSHALL FUNDRAISER: The River Cities Chapter of the Marshall Alumni Association will have a tournament on June 18 at Diamond Links Golf Course in Ashland. Entry fee $50 per player and $200 per team Hole sponsorships available. Trip to Pinehurst Resort in November is one of the prizes. Proceeds go to scholarships and books for Marshall students.
