Winfield girls cruise past HHS

Sep. 20, 2013 @ 12:26 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Huntington High girls soccer coach Paul Farrell could see what was going to unfold Thursday night a mile off.

His Highlanders squad, comprised of mostly freshman and sophomores, played host to defending Class AAA state champ Winfield, which returned a nearly identical squad for the 2013 season compared to what the Generals had last year.

The result was an 8-0 romp for a Winfield team that kept its starters in for most of the contest. First-team 2012 all-state selection Jayne Lawman, a junior, scored the first goal of the game about a minute into the contest, and the last goal on the night with 43 seconds remaining.

The Generals put up an overwhelming 29 shots, while Huntington High managed only one.

The Highlanders seemed to rally after falling behind 2-0 in the first 10 minutes of the match, trying to compete with Winfield's superior physicality and speed, but could never manage an organized offense. Instead Huntington High spent most of the match desperately trying to clear the ball out of its own end.

Huntington High might have been able to make it to the half with something to play for, but was dealt a severe blow to morale with 12 seconds remaining in the first frame, when a penalty kick was awarded to Winfield freshman Mary Lawman. Lawman, who was taken down from behind in the penalty area, easily put the ball in the back of the net for a 4-0 half time lead.

From there, the rout was on.

"What you saw were the growing pains of a young team going up against the state champions," Farrell said after the match. "This was a character check for them to learn how to play against an experienced team and they fought for 80 minutes.

"We try to learn from our mistakes, so there was a lot of learning going on tonight, but you can't question the effort. Give me a year or two, and you're going to see a group of girls who can return the favor."
