VT gets best of MU, 29-21, in 3 OT

BLACKSBURG, Va. — Virginia Tech quarterback Logan Thomas scored on a 2-yard run and a two-point conversion run in the third overtime Saturday and the Hokies downed the Marshall Thundering Herd, 29-21, in Lane Stadium.

Marshall (2-2) took a 21-14 lead into halftime when Gator Hoskins pulled in a 13-yard TD pass from Rakeem Cato and Justin Haig kicked the extra point with 9:06 left in the second quarter.

The third quarter was scoreless.

Virginia Tech (3-1) pulled even with 3:09 left in regulation when Thomas connected with Willie Byrn for a 2-yard touchdown pass that capped an 83-yard drive.

The Hokies had the football first in overtime and missed a field goal. Marshall had a field goal attempt blocked.

Cato fumbled on the Herd’s possession in overtime two, but the Hokies missed another field goal try.

Following the Thomas touchdown in overtime three, Marshall was stopped on downs.

Marshall has a week off before its Oct. 5 Homecoming game against new Conference USA member UTSA.
