Herd soccer team hosts So. Carolina

HUNTINGTON -- South Carolina and Marshall University play a Saturday night Conference USA men's soccer match on Hoops Family Field at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex.

Kickoff is 7 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for youth and $3 for people in groups of 10 or more. Fans wearing something pink will be admitted for $1 in support of breast cancer awareness.

South Carolina, a C-USA affiliate member for men's soccer, has a 5-5-3 season record and 2-1-1 league mark.

"It is now crunch time for us because things will not get any easier with us playing the one of the toughest conferences in the country," Marshall coach Bob Gray said. "This will be a good match for us and we are looking forward to it. They will be ready to face us and we will be prepared as well. We just have to score some goals and be a little more solid defensively."

Marshall is 2-7-4 for the season. The Thundering Herd is 0-2-1 in C-USA.

VOLLEYBALL

HUNTINGTON -- Marshall volleyball defeated East Carolina on Friday, 3-0, in Cam Henderson Center.

Marshall coach Mitch Jacobs recorded his 400th career victory and his 218th win at Marshall. Marshall won, 25-19, 25-18, 25-18.

"It feels really good to get my 400th career win with a big conference victory," Jacobs said. "But with that being said, I'm more worried about getting my 401st win on Sunday against UAB."

Marshall, now with an 11-11 season record, is 5-2 in Conference USA. The Thundering Herd goes to UAB for a 1 p.m. Sunday match.

Laura Der had 13 kills and seven digs for the Herd. Dorothy Rahal recorded 15 digs.

East Carolina dipped to a 10-13 season record and is 1-5 in C-USA.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

HUNTINGTON -- Florida Atlantic women's soccer defeated Marshall, 2-1, Friday night at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex on a goal by Marisa Russo with less than two minutes remaining in the match.

FAU (3-8-4, 1-2-3 Conference USA) had a first-half goal from Claire Emslie. Marshall (7-5-2, 2-3-1) pulled even in the second half with Myka DeMarco's goal off an assist from Erin Simmons.

The Thundering Herd plays another home match at 1 p.m. Sunday against Middle Tennessee.

TENNIS

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Marshall freshman Rachael Morales won two matches Friday and advanced into the round of 64 main singles draw at the ITA Atlantic Regional.

Morales defeated Kristina Eisenbrand from St. Joseph's 96-2, 4-6, 6-2) and Sophie Barnard of Georgetown (5-7, 6-2, 6-1).

"I'm really impressed once against with Rachael (Morales) and her fighting attitude," Marshall coach John Mercer said.

CROSS COUNTRY

EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- Marshall runs Saturday in the Evansville Invitational. The Thundering Herd's final regular season meet begins at 11 a.m. on the UE Cross Country Course.

Marshall will have two weeks to prepare for the C-USA championship meet, Nov. 2, in Denton, Texas.
