Barboursville, Milton win in cross country championship
ONA -- Middle school cross country kicked into high gear Tuesday with the first Cabell County championship meet on the Cabell Midland High School course. Barboursville won the boys title while Milton claimed the girls top prize.
Barboursville's boys scored 29 points, followed by Milton with 43 and Beverly Hills in third place with 52. Milton edged out Barboursville 32 to 39 in the girls race, and Beverly Hills took third with 52 points.
Milton's Jorden Thornton propelled her team to the title by winning the girls' individual title. She ran the 3,315-meter course with a time of 13:26, with the nearest competitor almost a full minute behind.
Thornton said she had been anticipating the event and put in the work so she could win as an eighth-grader who will move on to join the Cabell Midland High School team.
"I have this thing where I want to be the best at everything I participate in and this was a big achievement for me before I go to high school," Thornton said. "Winning the individual race and team was all I could have asked for and I am just so happy right now."
Alex Ellis from Barboursville finished second in the girls division behind Thornton by running a 14:20. Ellis' teammate Kendall McNeely took third with a 14:43.
Barboursville's Jacob Burcham also lifted his team to a championship by capturing the boys individual title with a time of 11:34. It was only Burcham's second cross country meet of the year because he also plays football.
In addition, Burcham also plays soccer, runs track, and heats up the basketball court.
"I kind of expected to win this individual title even though I haven't ran in all the events this year," Burcham said. "I think I'm able to perform well because I stay in shape with all the sports I play."
Burcham is also an eighth grader that will take his athletic skills to Cabell Midland. He said he intends to play football, run track and maybe continue his cross country success.
David Jobe crossed the finish line second in the boys race for Barboursville with a time of 12:09 Milton's Avery Campbell came in third with a time of 12:17.
