ASHLAND -- Nick Duffield of Chesapeake, Ohio, played his way into the field for the American Junior Golf Association Bluegrass Junior golf tournament.

Duffield fired an even-par round of 70 in a Monday qualifier to secure a spot in the tournament that begins Wednesday at Bellefonte Country Club. The qualifying round featured 84 boys and girls age 12 to 18 from 21 states and Germany.

Ten boys and one girl advanced.

Daniel Martinez of Austin, Texas, carded a 2-under 68 while Maddie Hamilton from Louisville, Ky., posted an 81 as the Boys Division and Girls Division medalists respectively.

Martinez had four birdies on his scorecard.

Other Boys Division qualifiers were Duffield; brothers Nick and Jack Sparling of Dublin, Ohio; Ben Montgomery, Lucas Jones and Stephen Stallings Jr. of Louisville, Ky; Patrick Luth from Medina, Ohio; Alex Weiss of Pickerington, Ohio; and Austin Morrison from Charlotte, N.C.

Sean Sherman of Medina, Ohio; Cole Berman of Rosemont, Pa.; and Scott Jaster of Bryn Mawr, Pa., opted out and chose to accept an AJGA Tournament Exemption in lieu of playing in the championship.

Hamilton qualified for the Girls Division in her first AJGA appearance.

The Natural Resource Partners Bluegrass Junior begins Wednesday, with two waves of tee times running from 7:30 a.m. to 9:09 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. to 1:24 p.m. off the Nos. 1 and 10 tees.

A field of 144 players will continue with rounds Thursday and Friday. A cut will be made following the second round.
